The Paradox of Travel and the Environment
Carla and I almost always fly when we travel. We love our adventures, but we’re painfully aware of the environmental cost. Still, I don’t believe the solution is to stop traveling altogether. Because while staying put might lower emissions, it would also lower something just as important: our tolerance for people who don’t look like us, think like us, or believe like us. Imagine a world where we all stayed within our own borders.

The Essence of Travel: Openness, Surprise, and Change
Carla and I had our 2026 plans all set. And then, as often happens in life, something shifted. Another door opened. Without warning, an entirely different adventure presented itself, and we felt the unmistakable pull to step through. Instead of heading into the Southlands, we’ve decided to turn east - to Asia.

Travel Perspectives: Remembering Who We Are in Nature
For me, being in nature is like stepping into a sanctuary. It has always been my spiritual center - the place where I find peace, perspective, and connection. Nature gives me what religion gives to many people: humility, reverence, and awe.

The Question that Follows Me on Every Journey
Whenever Carla and I travel - especially in Europe - there’s one question we hear again and again. It’s asked with genuine sincerity, often in quiet moments over coffee or during a conversation with someone we’ve just met: "Why, in the United States, do you choose your guns over the lives of your children?"

Our Next Adventure . . .
At this time of year, Carla and I are usually finalizing our fall travel plans to Europe - where we’ve typically spent mid-September to mid-December exploring and soaking up life abroad. But this year, we’re doing things a little differently.

The Quiet Shift Toward Home
One thing I’ve really come to appreciate about traveling abroad is the fresh perspective it gives me on life back in the States. The distance makes it easier for me to see things with more clarity - a clarity that’s hard to find when I’m caught up in the routines and constant busyness of everyday life at home.

The Real Gift of Travel
We’ve been back about a week after four and a half months of travel. I’m still adjusting to the time zone and working through some very mixed-up sleep patterns, yet my reflections are already beginning to take shape. So I thought I’d share a few while they’re still fresh.

Asheville, Nashville, and What’s Next
It’s hard to believe, but our 4½-month journey is coming to an end. Next week, we’ll be heading back to the U.S.

Where Real Life Still Happens: The Quiet Magic of Syros, Greece
Most of us picture the Greek islands with whitewashed villages, blue-domed churches, and beach paths. Syros isn’t like that. It’s not a polished vacation spot. It feels like a place with its own pace and history. Maybe not the first choice for someone dreaming of Santorini or Mykonos, but that’s part of why it’s special.

Puerto Vallarta: A Beacon of Love and Inclusivity in a World Struggling with LGBTQ+ Rights
I'm reposting this blog from a year ago, reflecting on our experience during Pride Month while we were in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. I am sending love and solidarity to the LGBTQ+ community around the world - today and every day - as we honor and celebrate Pride throughout the month of June.
