TRAVEL BLOG

Dubrovnik is Gorgeous, But . . .
Dubrovnik, Croatia is undeniably beautiful. Nearly every blog post or review about it is glowing, and it is easy to understand why. Its setting on the Adriatic is stunning, the old stone streets are striking, and the famous city walls are among the most intact and impressive in Europe, perhaps even the world. Walking those walls and looking out over the sea and the terracotta rooftops was a memorable experience. And yet . . .

Why We Decided Not to Travel to Turkey Right Now
In early April, Carla and I had planned to spend three weeks in Turkey, with time in Istanbul, Cappadocia, and the coastal town of Alaçatı. It was one of the parts of
this journey we were most excited about. Turkey offers so much history, culture, and beauty, and we were eager to experience more of it.
But over the past several days, we made the difficult decision to cancel that part of our trip. The reason is the war involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

Kotor, Montenegro: So Much Beauty
Just beyond the town, the mountains rise quickly and sit close enough that you can’t ignore them. They’re steep, rugged, and always present. When clouds move in, the peaks disappear. When the sky clears, they return just as suddenly. After a storm, they feel even larger and their color shifts. Their presence changes how you experience the town. You’re constantly aware of the power of the landscape and how surprising it feels to find a place this small and gentle tucked right

Life as Art: A Traveler’s Reflection
Both Carla and I love art. Wherever we travel, one of the first things we look for is the local art scene. We’re drawn to places where creativity is alive and visible, and where artists are part of the fabric of daily life. Art tells the story of a place in ways no guidebook or history book ever could. It carries emotion, memory, struggle, and beauty all at once. It shows you not just what happened, but how it felt.

Sicily: Where History is Still Lived
If you arrive expecting the charm or polish you might associate with parts of northern or central Italy, Sicily can feel rougher around the edges. It’s not as wealthy, and things don’t always work smoothly or quickly. Infrastructure can be inconsistent, and patience becomes part of the experience. But what Sicily may lack in refinement, it more than makes up for in character.

Travel Perspectives: Viewing America from Abroad
Being abroad, especially here in Europe, has given me a different lens through which to see American politics. Distance has a way of doing that. It brings both discomfort and clarity. When you step outside your own country and begin to see it through the eyes of others, especially those not caught up in its daily drama, the noise begins to fall away. Certain truths come into focus, and once seen, they are hard to ignore.

Palermo, Sicily: Unapologetically Itself
Walking through the city feels less like a history lesson and more like being surrounded by pieces of the past that never really went away. Arab, Norman, Spanish, and Italian influences sit side by side, sometimes harmoniously and sometimes awkwardly, but always honestly. That complexity alone makes the city fascinating. And then, of course, there is the food.

Southern Türkiye: The Beautiful Turquoise Coast
The scenery along Türkiye’s Turquoise Coast is breathtaking, and even that feels like an understatement. The name "Turquoise Coast" is well-earned. The water truly is that color, so vivid it almost dares you to jump in. And then there are the mountains, rising dramatically, often appearing to emerge straight from the sea.

Travel and the Meditation of Beauty
Over time, travel has taught me that beauty isn’t reserved for spectacular scenes. It doesn’t show up only in postcard moments or perfect views. I notice it just as often in worn streets, imperfect buildings, the way light hits a wall, or in small, ordinary moments I once would have hurried past.
Travel doesn’t just show us beautiful places. It teaches us how to recognize beauty wherever we find ourselves. Once that happens, the way we see begins to change, and it doesn’t

Antalya, Türkiye Through Our Eyes
We spent two weeks in Antalya, Türkiye, and the mountains alone made the trip worthwhile. These were not ordinary mountains. They rose straight up from the sea with a strength that was impossible to ignore. Powerful, yet calm at the same time, they carried a presence that stayed with you. Being near them reminded me how much beauty and mystery still exist in this world when we slow down long enough to notice.
